Graduation Internship ‘Residual strength of grass covered levees’

Are you interested in helping us with the design of safe levee? Than this is your chance.

Wat ga je doen?

Within the legal assessment instrument (WBI2017), only the upper 0,5 m of the grass cover of levees can be taken into account as strength. Any erosion-resistant (clay) layers present underneath cannot be included in calculations, while these are often present. This led us to the following question:

‘How can we consider the residual strength of a levee with a failed grass cover on the outer slope?’

Arcadis would like to investigate this for waterboards for which it carries out many projects. The following sub-questions are relevant:

  • What has been done with the underlying knowledge of VTV2006 and TR Steenzetting?
  • How can a probabilistic approach be shaped? At what time does the grass cover fail during a storm, at the beginning, at the end or anytime in between?
  • How can residual strength be properly embedded in the flood risk approach?

Would you like to help us with questions like these? You can read the requirements for this graduation position below.
